There is a 1000 litre water tank, on a sunny day can reach up to 75 degrees. Fresh water is drawn from a well and piped through an external heat exchanger. This is controlled to heat it on demand to 50 degrees so there is no danger of overheating and of possible contamination as the hot water is spring fresh all the time.

The heating system is a high velocity air system that uses the heat stored in the 1,000 litre hot tank to heat the air supplied to each room. There are 6 zones that have a programmable thermostat. The heat recovery ventilation system is combined with the heating system and the ratio of fresh air can be adjusted.

The house is effectively passive for nine months of the year and for the other three is the log stove with back boiler. There is also provision for a backup heating system if required.

There are LED bulbs throughout but, owing to the abundance of natural light that fills the house during the day, even the cost of lighting is minimal.

The former schoolhouse is now a family home with four spacious bedrooms, three of which are ensuite, all have vaulted ceilings and their own character, a main bathroom with a designer bath, and a central corridor running 12 metres long, two large living areas with extensive modern built in storage, a light-filled open plan kitchen and dining space. The spacious garden include lawns, a woodshed, fruit trees and bushes, a dedicated organic fruit and vegetable garden, a greenhouse, workshop and storage outbuildings, fossil sandstone paved areas for enjoying the beautiful views of the tail end of the Wicklow mountains.
